Counseling
Through collaborative efforts with educators, parents and
other resource persons, the school counseling programs work to empower each of
our students to become creative problem solvers, compassionate and involved citizens
and life-long learners who can effectively meet the challenges of a changing
global community. To this end, counselors offer individual, group and
peer-directed counseling experiences and programs which are unique to
counseling and are essential in the total educational experience of the child.
Kindergarten
Students need counseling programs and services which will
help them: (1) relate to and solve problems with peers, school personnel and
parents, (2) understand and clarify their feelings and deal with these in
socially appropriate ways, (3) plan and pursue their education and career
futures, and (4) maximize their education.
Personal and Social Development
(1) Students will be aware of,
understand and respect personal characteristics, physical and intellectual
development and the development of personality. (2) Students will understand,
respect and care for others in order to develop and maintain effective
relationships with peers and adults. (3) Students will develop and maintain
listening and expression skills to relate effectively with others. (4) Students
will develop group interaction and leadership skills. (5) Students will make
appropriate decisions about drugs/alcohol. (6) Students will make appropriate
decisions about personal safety.
Self: Acceptance and
Respect
§ The learner will be able to
recognize his/her physical, intellectual and emotional characteristics.
Others: Effective
Relationships
§ The learner will be able to
recognize the physical, intellectual, and emotional characteristics of others.
Communication: Effective
§ The learner will be able to
recognize that all of us need to listen to and speak with a variety of people.
Leadership Skills:
Cooperation
§ The learner will be able to
interact with others in ways that demonstrate cooperative behavior.
Drugs/Alcohol:
Kinds/Helpful/Harmful
§ The learner will be able to
understand that there are many kinds of drugs; and that some are helpful to our
bodies, and some are harmful.
Personal Safety: Touch
§ The learner will be able to
know the difference between appropriate touch and inappropriate touch.
Career and
Life Planning
(1) Students will use a systematic
decision-making process. (2) Students will use an effective problem-solving
process. (3) Students will use learned goal-setting and planning skills to
establish a tentative career goal based on interests, capabilities, and values.
(4) Students will relate career choices to the demands of the world of work.
(5) Students will prepare to find and maintain employment
Decision-Making: Difficult
Decisions
§ The learner will be able to
recognize decisions that are sometimes difficult to make.
Solve Problems: Recognize
Feelings
§ The learner will be able to
recognize situations that produce happy or unhappy/angry feelings and how to
deal with them.
Goal Setting:
Activities/Interests
§ The learner will be able to
describe activities and interests he/she enjoys.
Work: Definition
§ The learner will be able to
define "work" and recognize work situations/opportunities in the
home, school and community.
Educational
Development
(1) Students will take responsibility
for learning in school. (2) Students will take responsibility for planning to
use future educational opportunities, with emphasis on planning for taking the
next educational step successfully. (3) Students will take responsibility for
behaviors in the school environment. (4) Students will learn test-taking
skills.
School/Learning: Making
Mistakes
§ The learner will be able to
understand that making a mistake is a normal part of learning.
Educational Opportunities:
Look Forward
§ The learner will be able to
describe what school will be like and what to look forward to in the next
grade.
Personal Responsibility:
Respect
§ The learner will be able to
show responsibility and respect for property of self, others and the school.
Test-Taking: Remember
Information
§ The learner will be able to
describe how to remember important information.
